The Last Flame

= Rekindle the Frozen Wastes =

An atmospheric, yet challenging 2D action platformer.

This game is still in progress and is made as a class project for the module CS4350 Game Development. My main assignment was to design & program the enemy and bosses, in addition to general programming.

At our first meeting, we quickly decided on a 2D action game that revolves around light. Then, we took inspiration from other 2D platforming games like Celeste, Super Meat Boy, and Jump King. To add puzzle elements, we added the ability to throw fire and manipulate the environments - and thus the concept was born.

It was a challenge to work in a group where most of us hadn't known much game development. We had to structurally divide the work so that no one gets too left behind while doing their part.

I learnt that communication is key in a group project. Inform what each of us is capable of, then deliver what is promised on time. We had to constantly check on each other to keep everything on track.

So far, everything seems to be going ok other than some minor setbacks. An alpha version without all the features is available to test on its GitHub page.

Player Controller Script

Though not my main work, I helped contribute major parts of the player character script. This includes setting up the base files, adding proper collision detection, and general bugfixing.

Camera and Events System

The game camera is controlled by a simple script that follows the player and can "snap" into certain positions according to certain triggers or positions.

"Juicing Up"

To ensure that playing the game "feels" good, I added most of the sound effects and particles of the player's actions.

Other Art Assets

Even though I'm not the main Sprite Artist in this project, I helped by providing some simple pixel art when necessary. In addition, I did most of the non-sprite based animations and particle effects. The logo and trailer video was also made by me.
